Sable Horton
Shades of Beauty
My name is Sable Horton and I am a Bay Area native, entrepreneur, speaker, writer, dancer/performer, activist, a social change agent, and a modern day abolitionist.
I was born in Vallejo, CA, however, I have lived and was raised all across the Bay. I grew up in a single parent household and found out very early that due to various circumstances, I was going to have a challenging life. I used to believe that I was going to amount to nothing more than the challenges surrounding me and others like me. Growing up, I was always the quiet girl at school who would sit and observe everything. I would notice the kids who, like myself, did not fit in. I noticed how certain kids would hide their struggles, insecurities, secrets, etc. I noticed the facades that a lot of us walked around in just to survive.
I walked around for years behind a facade…hiding the pain, sadness, and trauma I was facing and like so many other kids, I was not free.
By the time I got to middle school, I was dealing with intense emotional and mental health challenges, bullying, a hectic family life, and so much more. I always felt alone and invisible but I so desperately wanted to be seen, heard, and loved. I wanted a way to escape from the pain and sadness I was feeling and attempted suicide for the first time when I was 12. Honestly, no one even noticed, I was always that girl that fell between the cracks. It was at this time that the Lord put Shades of Beauty into my heart. I went on to graduate from middle school, high school, and college while I was going through life and managing many different challenges. I finally made it out of that crack that I had lived in my entire life, but when I looked back, I noticed that there were so many other girls and women who were stuck in the cracks of life.
In response to all I experienced and was witnessing in the lives of so many other women and girls, I launched Shades of Beauty, to go into the very cracks I was ensnared in and pull others out.
Shades of Beauty is a non-profit organization that exists to inspire all girls and women to be the best versions of themselves they can be. We do this by helping girls and women develop in several areas; love, identity, community, education, service, creativity, and leadership. Since launching Shades of Beauty Programs, I have been able to educate hundreds of students and community members about issues such as human trafficking, mental health, identity/self-esteem, and much more.
I attended Dallas Ranch Middle School, graduated from Deer Valley High School, graduated from Los Medanos College, and I am now a student at BIOLA University majoring in Psychology and Organizational Leadership along with a minor in Biblical Studies. Because of the work I do in the community, I am a sought after consultant for local non-profits and programs, speaker, and I am an award winning community advocate. I was the recipient of the 2020 Bay Area Inspire Awards, 2021 Modern Day Abolitionist Award from the San Francisco Coalition Against Human Trafficking, and one of the recipients of the 2022 Love Never Fails Appreciation Awards. I was also chosen to be on the cover of Rapporteur, a popular magazine targeting inner city young adults and I now have a show on Roku for youth and college aged girls and women where I am able to help pull even more girls and women out of the cracks.
Thank you for checking out Shades of Beauty. I hope you will join us and help make a difference in countless lives.
